As humans, we often struggle to be honest with ourselves. It is easy to accept inaccurate labels placed upon us. Likewise, we may have been presented with false information, calling for the need to “unlearn” firmly held beliefs.

Social scientists claim there is evidence of escalating narcissism in our culture. Even the casual observer can attest to an increase in narcissistic tendencies. These observations, however, usually manifest in the form of pointing fingers. But should we also turn attention to our own self-serving tendencies?
 

Luke Mercer was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. He has overcome a significant amount of adversity, enduring multiple reconstructive surgeries.
